Description

In this joint talk, Graeme will first present a brief overview of diffusion research being carried out at the Center for Mass and Thermal Transport in Engineering Materials. He will then proceed to focus on two areas of research at the Centre: 1) development of the Lattice Monte Carlo method for addressing continuum mass and thermal diffusion problems and 2) molecular dynamics of NiAl nanoparticles. Next, Irina will present the development of new atomistic theory for dealing with the dependence of the interdiffusivity on very dilute solute concentrations in a binary alloy system.

Biographies:

Graeme received in PhD in chemical physics in 1973 from Flinders University in South Australia. After a postdoc at ANSTO near Sydney he joined Argonne National Laboratory as a Staff Scientist. In 1985 and after 10 years in the US he returned to Australia as the Principal Research Scientist at ICI-Australia but within two years he took up an academic career at the University of Newcastle. At Newcastle, he holds a prestigious Personal Chair in Materials Engineering. He founded the Diffusion in Solids Group which eventually became the Center for Mass and Thermal Transport in Engineering Materials. Graeme has published 350 journal papers and book chapters and edited some 15 books. He has also been the founder of the journals: Defect and Diffusion Forum and Materials Science Forum and has edited them for well over 25 years. He has delivered over 50 invited talks at international conferences.

Irina received her PhD in 1991 in applied mathematics from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. After a short research stay in Japan in 1993 she joined the Diffusion in Solids Group Newcastle where she was soon awarded prestigious Queen Elizabeth and Australian Professorial Fellowships. She is presently a Research Professor and the Director of the Center for Mass and Thermal Transport in Engineering Materials. Irina has published 220 journal papers and book chapters and has edited several books. She has delivered some 30 invited talks at international conferences.

Both Graeme and Irina have jointly won many international awards for their contributions to diffusion research.
