In 2010, the National Science Foundation awarded a grant to Sudipta Seal and Larry Hench for their research into oil spill cleanup. Seal and Hench are developing a process for removing oil from seawater using fly ash — a by-product of burning coal. Their grant was one of several that NSF awarded to help with cleanup and environmental protection after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
