Wade Wilson, an undergraduate in Electrical and Computer Engineering, won the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship.
The prestigious award is sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory and U.S. Department of Defense. The scholarship will cover Wilson’s 5-year Ph.D. program with a stipend of $38,000 per year along with health and other benefits.
Wilson has been a member of the Nano-Optics Group for two years, and his work on cavity-coupled plasmonic bio-sensors drew attention from the AFRL.
The SMART program promotes education, recruitment and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in science, mathematics, and engineering studies. The scholarship allows individuals to acquire an education in exchange for a period of employment with the Department of Defense.
